The fall in GDP in the euro zone I quarter was 2.5% and was highest in 14 years

Eurozone GDP fell in the first quarter of 2009 to 2.5% on the previous quarter, which was the maximum fall to begin tracking this data in 1995, reported Bloomberg referring to definitive data of Statistics European Union.

result coincided with a preliminary estimate, and with the forecast of analysts.

At the same time reducing the economic assessment of the euro compared to the first quarter of 2008 was revised for the worse. GDP of the region fell by 4.9%, rather than 4.8% as previously reported. In doing so, experts do not expect change from the preliminary data.

consumer spending and exports in January-March fell a record pace in 14 years, while investment fell against the backdrop of the worst recession in the world economy since World War II, which forces companies to reduce production volumes and the number of employees.

Household consumption fell by 0.5% on the fourth quarter of last year, investmentcosts - at 4.1%.

Exports in the first quarter fell by 8.1%, import - by 7,6% compared with the previous quarter. Public spending has increased over this period at 0.2%.

EU expects the region's economy in 2009 will decrease by 4% and 0.1% - next year. According to the World Bank this year, eurozone GDP will decrease by 4.8%, but in 2010 the region's economy may go on increasing.

The second quarter will show a decrease, although it will be less significant than in the previous three months. Incentives help stop further declines. However, economic activity remains depressed, - thinks economist Commerzbank AG Christoph Weil.
