Turkmenistan wants to reduce its dependence on Gazprom

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has recently been pursuing pro-Western course. His goal - with the help of a gas pipeline Nabucco to reduce the influence of Gazprom, said the newspaper Handelsblatt:

This is important for Germany's economy: the post-Soviet Turkmenistan gas emirate headed for a rapprochement with the West. In April, the gas pipeline Turkmenistan - Russia exploded. It was the only artery for the export of Turkmen gas to the West. Since Russia's side still has not eliminated the effects of the accident, in Turkmenistan started talking about the act of politically motivated sabotage. In Ashgabat believe that in this way, Moscow is trying to force Turkmenistan to continue to deal solely with the Kremlin's Gazprom.

But President Berdymukhammedov consistently is heading to the West. On Thursday, during their visits to Turkey and Bulgaria, he once again emphasized that Turkmenistan was interested in supplying gas to the EU gas pipeline Nabucco, which must be built with financial support from the European Union.

The consortium for the construction of Nabucco include OMV of Austria and the German concern RWE. Pipeline length of 3300 kilometers is planned to lay in eastern Turkey. Construction should be completed in 2014. For him to Europe will come to 31 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

energokontsern German RWE recently received a license to develop major gas field Block 23 in the south-east of the Caspian Sea. Thus, RWE is becoming a major competitor concerns EON and Wintershall, a subsidiary of chemical giant BASF. So far, they almost undivided sway in the market of natural gas in Germany.

To be able to deliver gas to Europe, followed by Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan insists on defining the status of the Caspian Sea and turned to international arbitration. Meanwhile, Russia and Iran are delaying the matter. They wanted to remain the main transit countries. Protracted disputes still blocking the gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan under the Caspian Sea.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Reinhard Silberberg emphasizes that in the West, the steps towards liberalization in Turkmenistan, however, restrictions on freedom of assembly, freedom of press and opinion, cause for concern. Nevertheless, Germany is ready to make a great contribution to the restructuring in Turkmenistan.
