The war in Afghanistan will continue for another 40 years?

That is the duration of the military operation predicts the future Chief of General Staff of the armed forces of Great Britain, General David Richards, who will take office on 27 August, in an interview with British newspaper The Times. His words should be seen as prophetic, as the end of the war is not expected.

Six years ago, on 11 September 2003, NATO took over command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), operating in Afghanistan under UN mandate. To date, the foreign troops led by NATO has more than 64 thousand troops from 44 countries. Apart from the forces of ISAF under NATO command in Afghanistan at the moment there are almost 40 thousand American soldiers, acting independently of NATO in the framework of Operation Enduring Freedom, began after the events of 11 September 2001. This contingent is growing in the coming year the country plans to send about 45 thousand American soldiers.

This is the first and largest ground operations of NATO, held outside of Europe. The wide-ranging and open-term NATO operation in Afghanistan is a key mechanism for implementing the transformation of NATO's democratic alternative to the UN, through the accession neatlanticheskih of Japan, Australia, South Korea and the transition from the regional nature of the organization to the global organization, - said Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Institute Demography, migration and regional development Yuri Krupnov.

Control over the heart of Eurasia is a part of old geopolitical doctrine of United States, said vice-president of the Center of Political Technologies, Sergei Mikheev. It is from Eurasia, in the opinion of Americans, believes the main threat. The operation in Afghanistan was inevitable, the Americans needed to take root in the region. And Afghanistan was a suitable occasion to move in this part of the world an enormous amount of resources and troops to create a land carrier - says a political scientist. Afghanistan to influence the key countries of Eurasia: China, India, Iran and Central Asia and, eventually, Russia. In his view, the tragedy of 11 September 2001 was the perfect opportunity to expand the information for global action in the Middle East.

Russia is embroiled in the Afghan war on two fronts: as a victim and as a participant. The ongoing civil war in Afghanistan and the failure of military force to bring order to the country reinforces the fundamental threat to Russia, and the first drug. The vast number of Russian drug addicts consume today Afghan heroin, and the total numberdepending on the most dangerous drug is steadily growing, in fact, in the past five years have seen a sharp rise narkoeksporta from Afghanistan to Russia.
